How is the experience sailing on Atyla?

Embarking as crew on one of our trips? This is what you can expect.

The 6 levels of adventure

Our trips are not all equally adventurous. Some are shorter and/or easier, and others are longer and/or more challenging. We classify our trips in 6 levels, from less to more adventurous, for you to have an idea of what to expect:

Type of trip This is for you if you want to… Suitable for…*
Level 1 Between 2 and 4 hours long. Sailing inside an estuary/river or a similar restricted area. Using the sails is possible but limited. Sail on Atyla.
Families with children (all ages)
Level 2 Between 3 and 6 hours long. Sailing inside an estuary/river and also on open waters. Using the sails is very possible, especially on open waters. Sail on Atyla using the sails. Families with children (all ages)
Level 3 Between 3 and 8 hours long. Sailing mainly on open waters (coastal). Using the sails is most probable. Possibility of a meal on board included. Sail on open waters, but can’t do a trip as part of the crew. Families with children of all ages (max. 1 child per adult)
Level 4 At least 2 nights on board. A mixture of coastal and offshore sailing. Some nights sailing and some at anchor. Accommodation and meals on board included. Have an experience as part of the crew, but can’t do a longer trip.  Minimum age 15
Level 5 At least 5 nights on board. A mixture of coastal and offshore sailing. Some nights sailing and some at anchor. Accommodation and meals on board included. Experience a trip as part of the crew.  Minimum age 15
Level 6 At least 300 Nautical miles and 7 nights on board. Mostly offshore sailing. Most nights sailing. Accommodation and meals on board included. Live the ultimate experience as part of the crew. Minimum age 18

* There is no maximum age to join. You just need to be fit enough to join the trip (of course, the more adventurous the trip (higher level), the more physically demanding the trips are.

* Children 12 and under pay a smaller rate (on the trips they can join). Check the information of each trip to see the price.

* Babies less than a year old sail for free and don’t need a reservation.

How is the day-to-day on board Atyla?

FOR TRIPS IN LEVELS 1, 2 AND 3:

You’ll embark the ship. Once everyone is on board, a member of the crew will make a welcome speech to explain the basics of the trip. Then we will set sail.

During the trip, you can walk around the deck, sit in any of the sitting areas around the deck, and mingle with other passengers and with the crew on board.

If we set some sails, the crew will ask for help with the manoeuvre. You can volunteer for that and get a feel of what it is to sail as a member of the crew.

During the trip, you can of course take as many pictures as you want on different parts of the ship and with the coastal background. Please tag us if you publish them: @atyla_ship.

We will arrive to the harbour a bit before the ending time, so that you can be disembarking at the disembarkation time.

FOR TRIPS IN LEVELS 4, 5 AND 6:

On the embarkation day:

  • Be sure to be at the ship at your embarkation time (look here if you don’t know when it is).
  • You’ll be welcomed on board by the permanent crew, and we’ll do a round of introductions.
  • The crew will give you a series of briefings related to safety and the life on board, and they’ll show you this video.
  • If the ship doesn’t set sail that same day, you’ll have a bit of free time to explore the city with your new shipmates.

Sailing as crew:

During the sailing, the crew gets divided into 3 groups to be on watch. Every 12 hours, you’ll be 4 hours on watch and 8 resting .

Being on watch means being on deck with the harness on, and ready to participate in the following activities with the guidance of the permanent crew:

  • Keeping the ship on course (this includes taking the helm).
  • Pulling the ropes and climbing the masts to set the sails (hoist the sails), lower them (strike the sails), and adjust their position.
  • Keeping track of the ship’s position on the sailing chart.
  • If the engine is running, keeping an eye on the engine sensors and gauges.
  • Maintenance works if they are required.
  • Helping with other sailing manoeuvres, like mooring and undocking.

Through all these activities, you’ll learn how to sail the ship. You’ll learn by doing and also from the explanations of the crew.

Challenges & more:

The experience itself, but also our crew, will present you with several challenges. Some of those challenges will be related to sailing, and others not so much.

The idea of these challenges is that you take them as opportunities to get to know yourself better (self-knowledge), reflect on and improve the 8 skills that are part of our program, and grow as a person in general.

There are also many moments of free time during the trip. In those moments you can chat with the other adventurers, relax on your own, read a book, sunbathe, play games (card games, boardgames, chess, etc.) play the guitar we have on board (or any instrument you bring), etc.

On most trips, we try to do one or more stops, anchoring at a bay or an island along the way. When this happens, you’ll be able to jump from the ship and swim around, and even go for a hike if you want.

Upon arrival at the destination harbour:

We normally arrive to port one day before disembarkation, so that we can celebrate the end of the trip with the group and explore the city.

We often also do open doors and some maintenance jobs in which you’ll have to help.

What do we do on board?

Atyla and her crew are prepared so that you can participate in all the activities on board with the necessary guidance. Some of them are:

  • The docking/undocking manoeuvres
  • Sail manoeuvres (this includes climbing the masts –if you can–)
  • Navigational watches (this includes taking the helm)
  • Welcoming people on board during open doors
  • Happy hour (everyone cleaning the ship)

These activities, plus the coexistence with the others and some challenges proposed by the crew, are used to work on 8 life skills:

Intercultural communication, Emotional intelligence, Critical thinking, Teamwork, Leadership, Responsibility, Courage, Resilience (ability to adapt).

Of course, some parts of the experience are just a pleasure:

  • Disconnecting: A bit of “digital detox”, turning off the phone and forgetting about every day worries.
  • Open sky: Seeing unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, and having time to appreciate them. Contemplating the stars without any type of light pollution.
  • Seeing marine fauna: Dolphins and other cetaceans that swim next to the boat, luminescent plankton in the middle of the night, turtles, whales, etc.
  • Being on a unique ship: Sailing on a wooden boat that looks like a piece of art.
  • Swimming: Jumping into the water in the middle of the sea (this is only possible on some trips, as it depends on the weather and the sailing area).
  • Delicious food: Prepared by our professional cook.
  • Connecting: With people very different from you, united by the bond of the shared adventure.
  • Exploring: New places, new cities, with the ship as a home and a group of shipmates to explore with you.

Frequent questions (FAQs):

Main questions:

Which measures are taken against Covid-19?

Most probably, we'll be doing Antigen tests to everyone on board upon embarkation. With that we'll be able to create a bubble on board and avoid using masks during the trips.

The exact measurements will depend on the evolution of the pandemic and the regulations in place when your trip starts.

You can see here our current Covid-19 protocol in more detail.

If any trip needs to be cancelled, it will be indicated on this page, and everyone with a booking will be informed per email and compensated according to our cancellation policy.

Which trip should I choose?

We would recommend you to choose according to:

  • The dates that fit for you (if you can avoid the middle of the summer -the high season-, you'll find better prices).
  • The duration that you're looking for (if you want a longer length, you can do two trips in a row).
  • The area that is more convenient/interesting for you.

The reason why we recommend this is because, honestly, even though every trip is unique, our trips are not too different from one another: Even if the challenges that we do on each trip are always changing, the program on board is always the same.

The weather conditions do make trips different (tougher and more adventurous, or easier and more chill), but these we cannot foresee until right before the beginning of the trip.

So, check the description of the trip(s) that fit your schedule, and choose one or more. You'll be good no matter what you choose.

Can I book for someone else?

Yes, that’s not a problem. You can also book several spots on the same trip for a group of people. The name in the booking is just for the invoice.

If your trip requires a passenger list or a crew list, the booking confirmation email you receive will include a link to a form to include the names of the people actually joining.

I can’t afford to pay, can I join?

As a social not-for-profit organisation, we don’t want to exclude anyone from participating on our trips because they lack the funds.

There are different things you can do to get funding:

The trip I want is sold out...

We recommend you to find a different trip since normally our trips get sold out with confirmed reservations. If no other trip fits, you can send us an email and we’ll let you know if there are any cancellations.

Can I pay with Bitcoin?

Yes you can! Atyla ship Foundation has been accepting Bitcoin as a payment method since 2017!

Transfer the corresponding amount for your chosen trip to the following wallet (3HkbsAuvq86BT8yHtigmdnnk51Dn78wj9L) and right away send us an email telling us about your transfer and about which trip you'd like to do.

Or first email us, and then do the transfer, both work.

QR Code Donate Bitcoin Atyla ENG

What do I need to bring?

Nothing special, the same as any other outdoor adventure. On your booking confirmation email you’ll receive a welcome pack with a detailed list of what to bring.

Here is a list of the most essential items:

  • Waterproof clothing & warm clothing
  • Towel(s) & wash kit.
  • Headlamp with red light
  • Seasickness chewing gum or tablets
  • Sleeping bag

But again, after booking you'll receive a document with a longer and much more detailed list.

Am I too old/young to join?

FOR TRIPS IN LEVELS 1, 2 AND 3:

No you're not. If you want to join, and can embark the ship on your own (or you're coming with someone that can help you embark) you'll be fine. Children can join with their parents no matter their age.

FOR TRIPS IN LEVELS 4, 5 AND 6:

Diversity is one of the elements that make the experience on Atyla so special. Our trips welcome people from different countries, with different professions and different social backgrounds. These many different perspectives make the conversations on board very interesting and enriching.

The ages of the people on board normally span from 16 to 65 years of age, and it is very rare that there won’t be more people of your same age range in your trip.

We also use the generational diversity as a valuable tool, not only to make everyone feel integrated but also because it is great to learn, work and make friends with people of ages different to yours.

The minimum age to join is 15 years old, but if you're coming with a parent or a guardian, sometimes we can make exceptions for younger ages. Get in touch and explain your case.

You are not too old to join as long as you are fit enough to move around the deck. We've had people as old as 87 joining, and they had a blast. This being said, for people older than 60 we require a medical certificate stating that you are in an ok physical condition to participate in an experience like this. If you are concerned you won't be able to participate fully, you can always book as a premium participant.

We often also do open doors and some maintenance jobs in which you'll have to help. Premium participants can choose not to join these activities and have more time to explore the city.

Can I embark before/after?

Sadly not. Embarkation time is important, and everyone needs to be there for the start of the adventure.

During the embarkation day (for levels 4, 5 and 6), you can normally come to the ship early to drop your bag, so you can walk freely around until embarkation time. See this page to see if the ship is already docked.

Can I disembark before/after?

For trips in levels 1, 2 and 3, no, you'll need to leave the ship at the end.

For trips in levels 4, 5, and 6, if you need to disembark before is normally not a problem.

Check the Estimated Time of Arrival to your disembarkation port on the ship's timeline. In principle, you can disembark as soon as we arrive (of course, tell the crew in advance).

Disembarking later is also sometimes possible (latest, when the next group embarks).

If the extra stay is one or more full days, you'll need to pay 59€ per day to cover the costs of meals and the stay on board (you can do the payment on this page).

I'm a professional sailor, can I join?

Yes you can!

All levels of experience are welcome, and if you'd ever want to become part of the permanent crew, joining us for a trip as a participant is the best way for us to get to know you and see your potential.

What if I get seasick?

The short answer: Have seasickness pills with you, and you'll be fine no matter what.

The long answer:

Unless you know that you don't get seasick, chances are that you can get seasick if we find big waves at some point during the trip.

The higher the level of the trip, the more chances of finding waves during the trip. In trips of level 1 it's almost impossible, in level 2 is not very likely, in level 3 is quite possible (depending on the weather), in level 4 is possible (but we can find shelter if it happens), in level 5 it will happen if the weather is rough, and in level 6 we won't even care about some waves (unless they are too crazy).

If you happen to get seasick, it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be able to enjoy the trip. It has happened to many of the people that have sailed with us, and most of them were able to enjoy. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Seasickness pills are super effective if you take them ON TIME (at least one hour before the ship starts rocking), if you take them when you already feel dizzy it's too late. Better to be safe: When in doubt, just take them. If you want to be sure, you can ask the crew to let you know whenever they expect the ship to start rocking, so that you know when to take your pill.
  • For longer trips (levels 4 and up): Even if you get seasick and the weather doesn't improve, most people get used to the ship's rocking in 2 days. So it's rare that you'd be seasick during an entire trip.
  • If you get seasick, you can take the sensation as a challenge to train your resilience and your emotional intelligence: Can you remain positive and enjoy the experience while enduring the horrible way how seasickness makes you feel? How is that situation similar to other moments in life? You can talk with your shipmates about it.
So, if your fear of seasickness is stronger than your desire to join our trips, don't come. But if you really want to do a trip, don't let this fear stop you.

Can I bring my own food?

For trips in levels 1, 2 and 3, see in the trip's description if any food/drinks are included. You can in any case bring your own food (of course, taking care of not dropping any rubbish), but we ask you not to bring drinks apart from water (if you want to get drink on board, please contribute with our charity and buy it on board).

For trips in levels 4, 5 and 6, meals are included, but you're always welcome to bring anything else that you'd like to have (of course, know that you cannot get drunk while sailing as part of the crew). We don't normally have much spare space in our fridge, so try to avoid bringing food that requires refrigeration.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Please see here our Cancellation Policy.

Other questions:

Do I need any previous experience?

Nope.

Some of the people that join our sailing trips have sailed on many boats. Some others have never sailed in their life.

The experience on board is designed to welcome everyone, and engage both the people that have been at sea before and the total beginners.

Atyla is a Tall Ship that we operate as a training ship, and we treat everyone on board as adults, so you’ll be able to choose what you learn taking into account your interests and your starting point.

After booking you’ll receive an embarkation form where you’ll be able to tell us about your previous sailing experience.

The food on the trip, can it be vegetarian?

Yes, and also vegan if you want.

After booking, you’ll receive a form where you can indicate the type of food you want.

What types of people come on board?

Normally, the trips in levels 1, 2 and 3 are filled mostly with people from the area where the trip happens.

Longer trips (levels 4, 5 and 6) attract more people from different places because, once they travel all the way to the ship, they rather do a longer trip.

When it comes to ages and lifestyles, Atyla’s trips are also quite mixed, having more families in the levels 1 and 2, and loads of solo-travellers on the other levels. Specially in the higher levels, what people on board have in common is that they like adventure.

No matter what, at Atyla we like to use the diversity on board as an asset that makes the experience more interesting for everybody. Each person has different life stories, and the context on board helps to share experiences and learn from each other.

How many people join each trip?

The maximum number of people per trip (including permanent crew) depends on the type of trip:

  • For trips in levels 1, 2 and 3 (near the coast and without sleeping on board) it’s 80 people.
  • For trips in levels 4, 5 and 6 (as crewmembers and sleeping on board) it’s 24 people.

The number of permanent crewmembers on board might vary, but normally it’s between 6 and 9 people.

Can I take pictures and videos?

Yes, as many as you want, but remember to tag us: @atyla_ship on Instagram, Atyla ship on Facebook and @sailtraining on TikTok

Will my mobile phone work?

It depends. If we are sailing near the coast, you might have moments of getting a decent signal. But for the rest of the trip your smartphone will basically be a camera (which is not bad at all).

In general, we recommend everyone to leave their phone away and use the opportunity to do a bit of digital detox and be more present in the moment and with the other adventurers. But of course, you’re an adult and you can do whatever you want.

And yes, if anything urgent comes up, we have communication systems in place on board that can be used to get in touch with the mainland.

How is the booking process? Is it safe? How do I pay?

To book a trip, you just need to click on it and select “Add to cart”. This will get you to the checkout page, where you can introduce your data and do the contribution towards the costs of the trip.

“Contribution” means that you’re not doing a payment for a service or purchasing a travel ticket (because you embark as training crew). This doesn’t reduce your rights as a customer.

The payment system that we use for credit and debit cards is called Redsys. This is the system chosen by our bank, which allows for secure encrypted payments and complies with all standards of data protection.

The other automated payment option that we offer is PayPal (also a secure and well-renowned provider). Bitcoin is also an alternative to pay for your trip, keep reading to learn how.

If you experience problems during the payment process, email us, and we will allow you to do a bank transfer.

Do I need to pay 100% upfront?

Normally yes, because most of the costs of your trip come from having the ship ready when you embark (maintenance costs and organizing costs), we need your payment upfront.

But we understand that this can be difficult or even scary for some people, that’s why we created the option to book with a 25% deposit for booking trips in levels 4 and up. This option has an administration cost of 50€.

Can I book more than one trip?

Of course! Each of our voyages is unique and there is no maximum stay on board. We actually recommend people to join us for at least 2 weeks if they want to fully experience our programme and the different activities on board.

To book several trips in the same booking, add them one by one to the shopping cart and then proceed to the checkout.

You can see pictures of the cabins and the interiors on this page.

You can see pictures of the cabins and the interiors on this page.

Please note that only the trips where you embark as crew (levels 4, 5 and 6) allow you to enter the cabins.

Can I get a certificate after the trip?

Yes, just email us at the end of your trip, and we will give you a participation certificate with your name and the dates of your trip.

Please note that, since our focus is on personal development, we don’t do official sailing courses (like RYA or similar). But if you have a seaman’s book/professional logbook, we can stamp it for the time and miles you did on board.

These trips are cheaper than what I expected... Why?

Yes, the participant experience is partially funded by our charity, because we want to make our trips affordable for more people. The real value of the experience is what the premium participants contribute.

If you can afford it, we recommend you to book as a premium participant (even if you want to participate fully). You’ll feel good about contributing a fair amount.

What is the Covid-19 protocol?

The exact measurements will depend on the evolution of the numbers and the regulations in place when your trip starts.

Expected for 2023 is:

  • Covid 19 vaccination or testing will most probably not be required unless the official recommendations get again more strict.
  • No masks will be required for crew on board (including participants). If the number of cases is high and the authorities recommend it, we might get everyone who embarks tested, to create a “bubble on board” and avoid masks during the trips.
  • Hygiene measures are kept high, because the cost and inconvenience of doing so are small, and they can prevent other diseases from spreading.
  • No other special measures or controls are expected.

In the unlikely event that a trip needs to be cancelled for any reason, it will be indicated on this page and everyone with a booking will be informed via email and telephone and compensated according to our cancellation policy.

What language are the trips in?

On the levels 1, 2 and 3, the local language of the place where the trip happens will be the main language of the trip, and English will the secondary language.

On the levels 4, 5 and 6, English is the main language, and Spanish is there as a support language to welcome people that don’t speak English.

People from all countries are welcome on board because the English on board is “Easy English”.

Of course, you don’t need to worry about being left out in either language, because we take good care of never letting that happen.

Where does the trip start?

The description of each trip includes location where the trip starts and ends, as well as dates and all the necessary information. Some trips end in a different location than where they started.

See this page if you are looking for the exact location where the ship will be moored in a specific city.

Can someone organize my trip to get to the ship?

Yes, there are agencies that can organize that for you. We can recommend Amaia Travel. They know our trips and are specialists in delivery trips to ships. They can find a nice connection for you and probably also a good price (and they, of course, speak English). Ask them!

They can of course organize both your trip to arrive to the ship, and your trip from the ship back home. They can organize both, or just one, up to you.

Does atyla have an engine?

Atyla has an engine, and we do use it.

We use the engine almost always for leaving and entering ports, it would be dangerous not to do so.

While we are at sea, we try to use only the sails whenever the wind allows it. Unfortunately, sometimes we need to arrive somewhere by a certain date, and the wind is not blowing so we have to turn the engine on.

When we sail with the engine (in combination with sails, or by itself), the experience on board can still be very enjoyable, but if you want to make sure that you will get to enjoy loads of sailing by sails during your trip(s), try to choose trips that start and end in the same place or trips that cover short distances.

One of my best experiences sailing so far. Atyla does not only provide a safe space for adventures but also attracts a unique group of people to share the experience with. Highly recommended 🙂

For me, it has been three years with Atyla and every year I must admit that Atyla has managed to create something special - the community that makes Atyla is extraordinary. Having sailed other ships I haven´t met any other with such an amazing attitude and a possibility for learning. You are doing a good thing!

I traveled on the Atyla for five days last summer. I have to say that, as an author that has been writing pirate stories for so many years, it was about time I had the full tall ship experience. My expectations were high and they delivered.I got to meet so many lovely people, the crew kindly answered all of my questions, and you can probably imagine I had a LOT of those.Basically, every experience I was hoping I would have the chance to live, I did. I got to sail during the day and at night, man the helm, learn about the rigging, go up the mast, learn knots, see dolphins, handle the sails, learn about navigation, safety in the sea, meet a bunch of super cool people, help keeping the ship clean and in optimal conditions, it was very intense and very cool. Granted, I got some bruises and got a little seasick too at first, but that's part of the whole experience I think, haha.Amazing experience, I'll certainly be joining the crew again soon. Recomended 100%.

A fantastic experience, based on love of the sea, respect and without forgetting that it is a civil training ship, with an international crew, young, but with a spirit of learning and sharing, not suitable for those who, for paying, go on a cruise.

Getting to know life on a large sailboat was quite an experience, and the crew was wonderful. I will surely return.

I have sailed on Atyla as an officer for an entire month. From all the boat's I have worked on, Atyla offers by far the most authentic traditional sailing experience. Even more so, Atylas crew guides participants to translate the profound treasures of the ocean into meaningful aspects of their lives on land. Join them to unlock the transformative power of the sea and integrate its lessons into your personal and professional growth journey.

It is worth getting closer and I think it is very beautiful to see. I have not sailed on this boat but I intend to. I think it can be an interesting experience.

We went on a three-hour sailing tour around the ría of Muros. What a lovely ship and friendly crew! They were very hard working and yet also very attentive to any needs we may have had. One of the crew members even gave a passenger some ginger root to chew on because she was feeling a bit seasick. They were multilingual as well, which I felt was a big plus. We were very lucky with the weather because it was sunny and warm. Altogether it was a great trip. I would definitely repeat it in the future if possible. I wish them luck in the tall ship race in A Coruña!

Very beautiful boat, crew at the top, super nice this trip at sea in Boulogne sur Mer this July 14, 2023. Go there really you do not regret.
We got a super nice tour though the ship and got really enthusiastic to learn more so we booked a three day sea sailing course. Then covid blocked our plans and then we got pregnant and now we have a baby and wait till she's big enough to go with us. Back on the bucket list!

Sailing experience with Atyla was just life changing! Its not only the freedom of the sea, the awesome places visited and the gorgeous ship itself, but the people on it, running it and experiencing it. The soul of Atyla is its people and they are for life! And of course the most magical food, sail training, playful dolphins, glowing waters (bioluminescence), swimming in random places while anchoring and all the hard work with the loveliest people sums up as the best memories for life. If you are in doubt to choose, then this is your sign and it is time for yourAtyla adventure story to tell others!! LOVE LOVE LOVE for this ship and humans!

Worth every Penny. Not a cruise-ship but an experience for adventurers ! I enjoyed it very much. The crew members are great people, super friendly and helpful. They teach you how to manage everyday on the boat and are full of advice for life at sea. On Atyla, you are likely to have a once in a lifetime experience, that is challenging but also rewarding. You don't need prior experience to fit in, it can be your first time at sea. You will learn how to steer the boat, climb the masts, pull the ropes, make knots, fishing, deck scrubbing, and much more.

Atyla is a beautiful ship managed by wonderful people. My 17 year old son went on his own from Canada, this past summer for a UK to Spain sail. Travelling during the pandemic was stressful but everyone was incredibly helpful and he had an amazing time. We hope you have another fantastic sailing year! ⛵️

Atyla is an amazing ship and project going on all year long. In winter they have volunteers to repair the ship and during Summer they teach people of all ages to sail on a traditional sailing ship, what she is.
